
An attic that stays hot or damp is worth investigating before a new roof covers it up. In a vented attic, intake and exhaust work together to move outside air beneath the deck. They are only part of the picture: insulation, air leaks from the house and indoor humidity matter too. Here is how those pieces fit, and when the roofing work should include an attic question.
The half of the roof that faces inward
Under the shingles sit underlayment, the wood deck and the roof framing. A conventional vented attic has insulation and an air barrier at the ceiling below. Outside air moves through the attic; the rooms should remain separated from it.
Ventilation helps remove heat and moisture, but a hot upstairs room is not a diagnosis of bad venting. Insulation, air leakage, shade, HVAC performance and the roof surface also affect temperatures. Adding vents cannot correct all of those conditions.
In cold weather, warm moist indoor air can condense on the underside of a colder deck. Rusted nail points, damp insulation or staining need an investigation of the moisture source and air leaks as well as vent capacity. Bathroom exhaust should discharge outside, not into the attic.
Intake low, exhaust high, and roughly equal
For an attic designed to be vented, intake commonly sits at the eaves and exhaust higher on the roof. Both openings need a clear path. A vent at the ridge cannot make up for a blocked intake below it.
The design balances the available net free area, the part of each vent that air can actually pass through. The right exhaust depends on the roof shape and available ridge, and intake can be at the soffits or another designed location near the eaves.
Ridge vents, box vents, turbines and powered fans are different options. Their placement and product requirements matter more than a simple count. A properly designed unvented attic has a different insulation and moisture-control strategy and should not be opened up with vents on assumption.
A blocked soffit starves everything above it
Insulation can cover the airway at the eaves, and paint or debris can obstruct a soffit vent. The panel can still look like a vent from the yard while much of its opening is blocked.
Baffles can maintain the passage between the insulation and the roof deck. Clearing or adding intake also needs to protect the ceiling air barrier and the intended insulation coverage. The fix depends on the actual eave assembly, not just on cutting a larger hole.
An attic check should also look for air leaks from the house. Sealing appropriate ceiling penetrations and the hatch can reduce warm, moist air reaching the attic. Venting and air sealing do different jobs and often need to be considered together.
Why more exhaust can make matters worse
Air follows pressure differences and available openings. Combining exhaust systems in one connected attic can cause air to move between nearby vents instead of along the intended path from the eaves. Product instructions need to guide the choice and placement.
A powered fan with insufficient outdoor intake can draw conditioned air through gaps in the ceiling. That can increase the load on the heating or cooling system without fixing the moisture source.
Before adding exhaust, the roofer checks the intake path, attic layout and existing vents. Separate attic compartments may need separate solutions. Intake and exhaust capacities are measured together; adding a device is not the diagnosis.
The numbers behind a balanced attic
Vent capacity is measured in net free area, which is the actual open space air can pass through once louvers, screens and baffles have taken their share. A vent's physical opening is always larger than its net free area, and the product spec gives the real figure per linear foot. Two vents that look the same size can have very different capacity, which is why counting vents from the yard tells you less than it seems to.
The model residential code starts with 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of vented attic space. A reduction to 1 per 300 has conditions, including the required distribution of high and low vent area and a vapor-retarder condition in colder climate zones. It is not permission to halve the area simply because the roof has a ridge vent.
The roofer checks the locally adopted code and the product specifications for the actual attic. The calculation is only one part of the job: vents must be open, correctly placed and connected to the space they are meant to serve.
The signs you can check without a ladder
Tell the roofer if upstairs rooms stay unusually hot, if you have noticed a musty smell or if a ceiling stain changes with the weather. Those observations help direct the inspection but do not identify the cause on their own.
From the yard you may see vented soffit panels, ridge vents or box vents. You cannot reliably measure their capacity or see an internal blockage from below. There is no need to enter an attic or disturb insulation to prepare a request.
Uneven shingle wear also deserves a roof inspection. Sun, material condition, installation and moisture can all affect it. Describe what has changed, and let the inspection sort out the cause.
Fix the airflow while the roof is off
A replacement is a useful time to review roof-mounted vents and their connections because the covering is already being removed. Some intake and air-sealing work can be done separately from a reroof. The proposal should identify which changes belong to the roofing work and whether another trade is needed.
Ventilation and substrate requirements can affect product coverage. Check the actual shingle and system warranty, including terms for an unvented assembly when that is what the house uses. The roof warranty guide is set out separately.

Does ventilation decide how long shingles last?
It is one factor in the roof assembly, alongside material, installation, sun and weather exposure. Ventilation helps a vented attic manage heat and moisture; it cannot promise a certain number of extra years.
What does a blocked soffit vent do?
It reduces the available intake air. The inspection checks the obstruction, the eave airway, exhaust capacity and air leakage from the house before choosing the correction.
Is a powered attic fan a good first step?
The attic should be assessed first. A fan needs adequate outdoor intake and can draw air from the rooms below when the ceiling leaks. Its compatibility with existing roof vents matters too.
How much ventilation does a roof need?
The baseline model-code ratio is 1:150 net free vent area to attic area. A 1:300 reduction has specific conditions; the adopted code and the actual attic design govern. A roofer uses the product's net free area, not the vent's outside dimensions.
Can the intake be improved without replacing shingles?
Some eave work, baffles and air sealing can be done separately. Roof-mounted exhaust changes may involve opening part of the covering. Have the proposed work explained before deciding whether it belongs with a reroof.
Should a sealed attic get new vents?
Not on assumption. An intentionally unvented attic has a different insulation and moisture-control design. A qualified assessment should establish how it is supposed to work before changing it.
