Standing seam, metal shingle and exposed-fastener panels are three different roofs
The word metal covers different profiles and attachment arrangements. The proposed system should be named in the scope.
- Standing seam
Raised seams conceal attachment beneath the panel or seam. Clip and fastening arrangements vary, and the details must accommodate the system’s movement.
- Metal shingles and stone-coated profiles
These use smaller formed units for a different appearance and layout. Suitability depends on the product and roof geometry.
- Exposed-fastener panels
Fasteners pass through the panel with the specified sealing arrangement. Inspection and maintenance requirements differ from concealed-fastener systems.
- Underlayment and trim
Valleys, eaves, rakes, walls and penetrations need system-compatible details.
- Coverage
Panel, finish and workmanship terms can cover different things. Compare the actual documents offered for the job.

Product lead times and installation sequence vary. Confirm the chosen profile, available finish and site arrangements before ordering.
Select the system
Choose the panel or shingle profile with its attachment method. A concealed-clip roof and a through-fastened panel have different details to maintain.
Plan removal and substrate work
Removal exposes the deck and gives access to old flashing. The proposal should show what comes off and how damaged wood will be priced if it is found.
Install the roof and details
Panels, clips, fasteners and trim work as a system. The installer follows that product’s details at valleys, walls, edges and penetrations.
Review the finished scope

Metal expands and contracts as temperature changes. The selected system needs the attachment and details intended to manage that movement. Roof edges and penetrations still need careful work.
- Attachment
The fastener or clip system and supporting structure must suit the design.
- Weather damage
Hail can dent metal and can also cause functional damage. Do not assume every dent is only cosmetic.
- Drainage
Valleys, roof edges and gutters must handle the water the roof collects.
- Heat
Reflectance and thermal emittance vary by color and finish. The material name alone does not establish cooling savings.

Questions about a metal roof on your house
Is metal loud in rain?
The deck, underlayment, insulation and ceiling affect indoor sound. A panel over an open carport is different from one over an insulated home. Discuss your actual assembly rather than relying on a blanket noise claim.
Will hail dents be covered by insurance?
The insurer decides under the policy, including any cosmetic-damage exclusion. Roofing assessment should distinguish appearance from functional damage. See roof insurance claims for the separate roles.
Can metal cover the existing roof?
The roof condition, product instructions and applicable local requirements decide whether an overlay is allowed and suitable. Do not assume the old covering can remain; concealed deck condition also needs consideration.
Does metal guarantee lower energy bills?
No. Color, finish, insulation, air sealing, climate and the building’s systems influence energy use. Compare tested surface properties and the complete roof assembly before expecting a saving.
